Find the Right Trim for Your Existing Shower Valve

Identify your shower valve family, check manufacturer-supported trim compatibility, and verify cartridge and wall fit before buying replacement controls.

Marco DeLuca

Match replacement shower trim to the installed shower faucet valve family—not just the brand, finish or handle shape. Buy only when the manufacturer confirms that your proposed trim fits the concealed valve body. A rough-in model number is the strongest starting point; handle operation, screw locations and parts diagrams help identify an unknown valve.

A shower mixing valve is the assembly behind the wall connected to the hot and cold supplies. In a cartridge-based valve, the cartridge fits inside that body and connects to the visible handle. The handle and wall plate are trim, not the complete valve. Moen’s valve anatomy guide explains these separate components.

Select what you have verified; the checker shows whether you are ready to order trim.

Trim Order Readiness

Not Ready: Identify the Valve

Find the installed rough-in model or get manufacturer confirmation of the valve family before selecting trim.

This checker tracks verification; it does not identify a valve from appearance or establish compatibility itself.

This guidance covers changing visible controls while keeping the installed valve body. For a fault or a decision between cartridge repair and whole-body replacement, start with matching the repair before ordering. Shower Parts Store is an information resource, not a parts retailer.

Identify the Valve Before Choosing Trim

Photograph the complete control and record the clues that can distinguish valve families:

Clue What to Record
Brand markings Wording on the wall plate and handle cap
Handle operation Rotation only, pull-out plus rotation, or separate temperature and volume controls
Control layout Number of handles and what each operates
Plate screws Clock-face positions and center-to-center spacing
Installation history Original model number, packaging, invoices and whether previous work changed the trim or valve

Moen uses brand markings, handle count, installation year, handle operation and escutcheon screw locations in its trim-identification guide.

Treat those observations as clues, not proof of compatibility. Moen’s guide shows both later Moentrol and Posi-Temp valves with plate screws at 2 and 7 o’clock. Screw position alone does not distinguish them.

A control that selects the handshower instead of the overhead shower may operate a transfer valve rather than the mixing valve. Moen distinguishes those functions in its valve anatomy guide. Identify each control separately; our transfer valve versus mixing valve guide covers that layout.

If the model remains unknown, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing the handle and decorative plate, then photograph visible body markings and mounting features. Do not loosen a cartridge retainer just to look behind the trim.

Before removing a cartridge, shut off both water supplies and verify that flow stops with the shower still assembled. If you cannot reliably isolate the water, stop and get plumbing help. Moen explicitly requires the water to be off for cartridge replacement in its valve guide.

Confirm the Exact Valve-to-Trim Pairing

Look for a manufacturer statement connecting the installed rough-in to the proposed trim model. A shared brand name or “universal” label is not enough. The following examples establish compatibility only within the systems and models described.

Delta R10000 Supports Compatible MultiChoice Trim

A confirmed R10000 MultiChoice rough-in supports compatible Delta 13, 14, 17 and 17T trim, allowing changes in control function within that system. Delta states that the R10000-UNBX is the valve body only: trim is sold separately, and the cartridge ships with the trim.

“Universal” does not establish cross-brand compatibility; Delta guarantees this rough-in with Delta valve trim. Check Delta’s MultiChoice compatibility guide and R10000-UNBX documentation.

Older Delta 1400 Bodies May Need Their Original Cartridge Type

Compatible new trim does not always mean its included cartridge fits the old body. Delta confirms that T14032 trim can update a pre-MultiChoice 1400-series valve using RP19804, but the new cartridge supplied with the trim will not fit that older valve.

Keep a serviceable RP19804 or obtain the correct replacement for the confirmed body. Delta’s T14032 compatibility answer makes this distinction explicit. Do not extend this example to every older Delta valve or every new trim kit.

Moen Posi-Temp and Moentrol Trim Are Not Interchangeable

Moen’s older single-handle trim families are not interchangeable: Posi-Temp trim belongs on a compatible Posi-Temp valve, while Moentrol requires compatible Moentrol trim.

Some older Standard valves accept specified Moentrol trim through adapter kit 145058, but Moen lists exclusions. Use the manufacturer’s trim-identification and adapter guide linked above rather than assuming every Moen handle fits.

Verify Wall Fit, Adapters and Box Contents

Once the valve-to-trim pairing is confirmed, compare the proposed trim’s installation drawing and parts list with the existing installation.

Check What Must Match
Valve depth Position relative to the finished wall; any required extension kit
Plate coverage Dimensions sufficient to cover the existing wall opening
Mounting parts Correct handle adapter, sleeve, screws and temperature-limit components
Cartridge Whether one is included and whether it fits the installed body

Also check whether pictured accessories, such as the showerhead or tub spout, are actually included. A product photograph does not replace the box contents list.

Depth accessories can depend on the trim series. Delta’s R10000 specification sheet, for example, lists different extension kits for 13/14, 17 and 17T trim. Use the instructions for your exact pairing, not a similar-looking kit.

Order when you can name the installed valve, the proposed trim and the manufacturer-supported pairing—and have checked physical fit. If that connection is missing, send the manufacturer clear photographs and your recorded measurements before buying.

After installation, follow the model-specific instructions for leak checks and maximum-temperature adjustment. Delta requires its temperature setting to be checked, not assumed correct out of the box. Delta trim installation instructions explain the series-specific adjustments.
