Moen Chateau replacement: check the valve before buying new trim

Match discontinued Moen Chateau shower models to updated kits, identify the cartridge, and check whether you can keep the in-wall valve.

Marco DeLuca

For the legacy Chateau 2353/L2353 Posi-Temp tub/shower kit, the updated model is L23553. If you are keeping a compatible Posi-Temp valve behind the wall, look at TL5183 trim instead of buying another complete valve-and-trim kit. PlumbersStock lists those replacement numbers, and Moen’s updated parts diagram confirms the new trim fits its 62300-series or 2500-series valves. (Model crosswalk, Moen parts diagram)

That answer applies to Posi-Temp Chateau, not every older faucet carrying the Chateau name. A discontinued faucet model does not, by itself, mean you need to replace the valve inside the wall.

Shower Parts Store is an identification resource, not a parts retailer.

What was discontinued?

Moen describes Chateau as a refreshed collection that still includes shower-only and tub/shower trim and kits—not an abandoned product line. PlumbersStock reports that legacy Chateau SKUs would be discontinued and no longer orderable after August 1, 2026. Treat that as the reported legacy-model ordering cutoff, not proof that every dealer has exhausted its remaining stock or that service parts are unavailable. (Moen refresh announcement, PlumbersStock transition notice)

1. Identify the valve, not just the handle

Record how the shower turns on before taking anything apart:

  • One handle that rotates only: consistent with Posi-Temp, which uses a 1222 cartridge. Confirm the valve family; Moen also has rotate-only M-CORE controls.
  • One handle that pulls out to start water and pushes in to stop: older Standard and Moentrol valves use 1225 cartridges. They are not Posi-Temp valves. However, M-CORE 3 Series also uses push-pull operation, with a different cartridge—so movement alone does not confirm 1225.
  • Separate hot and cold handles: Moen’s two- and three-handle shower guide lists 1224 cartridges for those controls; the diverter in a three-handle installation is a separate part.

These distinctions come from Moen’s shower cartridge identification guide. For a closer comparison, use our Moen 1222 versus 1225 identification checks.

Also photograph the escutcheon—the plate against the wall—and note its screw positions. Moen identifies Posi-Temp screws at approximately 2 and 7 o’clock, but some Moentrol valves share that pattern. Screw position alone is not enough. Moen explicitly says its different valve families’ trim kits are not interchangeable. (Moen trim compatibility guide)

Stop before ordering if handle movement, screw positions and the model documentation disagree. Have Moen identify the valve from photos rather than choosing trim by appearance.

2. Match the legacy Posi-Temp model number

The following are selected Chrome replacements listed in PlumbersStock’s Chateau crosswalk:

Legacy model Updated model What you are replacing
2353 / L2353 L23553 Complete Posi-Temp tub/shower kit, valve included
TL183 / T183 TL5183 Posi-Temp tub/shower trim, valve not included
L2352 L23552 Complete Posi-Temp shower-only kit, valve included
TL182 / T182 TL5182 Posi-Temp shower-only trim, valve not included

Moen’s L23553 specification sheet identifies a 1222 cartridge, 1/2-inch CC connections and a 2.5 GPM showerhead. Those are complete-kit specifications; they do not mean you must remove an existing compatible valve to update the trim.

Keep the full model number, including finish and EP or NH suffixes, when comparing products. Moen’s new parts diagram distinguishes EP models with 1.75 GPM showerheads and NH models without showerheads. It also confirms the listed Chateau Posi-Temp trim fits 62300-series or 2500-series valves. (Moen updated illustrated parts)

3. Buy only the component you need

For a cartridge repair: order by confirmed valve family, not “Chateau.” Moen’s legacy 2353/T183 diagram lists replacement cartridge 1222. A confirmed Standard or Moentrol shower belongs on the 1225 identification path instead. (Legacy Posi-Temp parts diagram, Moen cartridge guide)

For a broken knob or worn plate: use the old model’s exploded diagram. For example, the legacy knob-style Posi-Temp diagram lists knob kit 100710, but it also shows different escutcheons for earlier production. Do not assume the newest Chateau handle is an individually interchangeable replacement. (Moen legacy parts breakdown)

For a cosmetic update: confirmed Posi-Temp valves accept Posi-Temp trim. Older push-pull valves need a different compatibility check; Moen documents an adapter route for certain Standard valves and limited replacement-part options for some original Moentrol valves. Ask Moen to confirm the exact body before buying an adapter or trim kit. (Moen compatibility guidance)

Before ordering trim, compare its plate coverage, handle reach and included tub-spout connection with the existing installation. For a spout change, record the pipe connection and projection; our tub-spout diverter matching guide explains those checks.

Before removing a cartridge or disassembling the valve, shut off the water supply, open the handle to relieve pressure and verify that water has stopped. Follow the model-specific instructions, including temperature-limit adjustment after reassembly. (Moen installation instructions)
