Choose the Right Door by Measuring the Shower First

A shower door should be chosen from the opening outward—not from a product photo backward. Match the Opening Style to the Bathroom Layout
The best movement style is the one that operates without colliding with the room or blocking access.
Tight bathroom or nearby fixtures

Fixed screens and tub doors
A fixed shower screen can suit a walk-in shower or wet-room layout where an operable closure is unnecessary. Evaluate it as a stationary barrier rather than assuming it will contain spray under every condition. When the opening points toward custom glass
Investigate custom fabrication or professional measurement when the shower has:

- Can seals be removed or replaced?

Water containment depends on the whole enclosure
Do not choose a frame type on the assumption that it inherently prevents or causes leaks. Water containment depends on the complete system, including:

Glass thickness is a system specification

Do not choose glass thickness independently from the door. Follow the exact specification for the selected model.
Measure Only After the Shower Is Finished
Measure the final opening only after the tile and grout—or acrylic surround—plus the base, curb, and other finished surfaces are complete. Measuring unfinished framing or backer board does not establish the final opening because the finished surfaces can change both dimensions and alignment.
If replacing an existing door, the old unit may need to be removed to expose the opening clearly. Removal does not establish that the previous frame, track, anchors, or other components are suitable for reuse.

1. Record three widths. Measure the finished horizontal opening at:

Keep all three values. The smallest identifies the tightest span, but it does not independently prove that a door fits. Differences among the readings reveal taper and help determine whether the selected system can accommodate the opening.

4. Document curb level and slope. Record whether the curb is level along the opening and how its top slopes from outside to inside. Compare those conditions with the selected system’s drawings and installation requirements.
5. Check both walls for plumb. Place the level vertically against each finished wall. Record the amount and direction of deviation rather than writing only “not plumb.” For example: “left wall moves inward toward the top.”

6. Map the surrounding room and shower. Mark:
- Showerhead and spray direction
- Intended hinge or opening side

Nominal Size Is Not the Door’s Actual Fit Range
A nominal size is a rounded label used to organize or market a product. It is not necessarily the exact opening width the door accepts.
Delta states, for example, that a nominal 60-inch door may have a maximum installation width of 59-3/8 inches. Most doors have an installation range, and required measurements vary by product. What an adjustable range does—and does not—mean
An adjustable door may accommodate variation between a documented minimum and maximum. That does not mean it can correct:
- Unlimited taper from top to bottom
- Walls beyond the model’s permitted out-of-plumb condition
- An inadequate threshold
- Attachment conditions that differ from the instructions
- An obstructed track or hinge location
- Insufficient operating or installation clearance
- An incompatible curb condition
- Incorrect handing or fixed-panel placement
Every relevant measurement must satisfy the manual. The smallest width remains useful because it identifies the tightest span, but compatibility may also depend on the largest width, the difference between widths, both heights, threshold depth, and wall alignment.
