Match the Seal Profile Before You Cut or Fit It

A magnetic shower room door seal is not universal. The replacement must match the mounting style, door geometry, glass thickness, closed gap and magnetic orientation. Where two magnetic profiles meet, identify both sides of the closure; replacing one side with a different profile can cause a poor fit or make the magnets repel.

Start With the Enclosure Model

Look for a logo, etched mark, installation manual, receipt or model label. Search the manufacturer’s parts diagram before comparing generic seals.

Manufacturers may organize seals by enclosure collection rather than dimensions alone. Roman lists separate kits for its Decem, Lumin8, Embrace and Haven ranges, as well as magnetic kits for 6 mm and 8 mm glass (Roman).

If the model is unknown, photograph the complete enclosure and both sides of the closure. MAAX asks for a photo of the unit and the part when a replacement cannot be found through its parts system (MAAX).

Keep both old profiles until the replacement has been fitted. Remove an undamaged section only if it comes off without forcing the glass or hardware.

Record Seven Matching Specifications

1. Mounting Style

Determine whether the seal:

• Pushes over a bare glass edge
• Slides into an aluminum channel
• Attaches to a wall profile
• Meets a separate magnetic strike rail

A clip-on glass profile cannot replace a channel insert merely because both contain magnets. Photograph the end of the profile because its cross-section often reveals more than a front view.

2. Glass Thickness

Measure the bare glass with calipers, not across the seal. If two glass edges meet, record each panel separately rather than assuming they are the same thickness.

Published profiles may cover only a narrow range. CRL lists one magnetic profile for 6–8 mm (1/4–5/16 inch) glass and another for 10–12 mm (3/8–1/2 inch) glass (CRL 6–8 mm profile; CRL 10–12 mm profile). Those ranges describe the cited CRL products, not every magnetic seal.

3. Meeting Angle

View the closed door from above and record the angle between the two mounting surfaces:

• 180 degrees: The door and adjacent panel are inline.
• 135 degrees: The door meets an angled panel.
• 90 degrees: The door closes against a perpendicular return.

Record the installed geometry rather than inferring the angle from one loose seal. The magnet may sit at an angle inside the profile even when the glass arrangement itself is inline.

4. Closing Direction

Record whether the door swings inward, outward or both ways. The closing direction can change the required profile pair.

CRL specifies different combinations for one-way and two-way 180-degree doors, plus separate combinations for 135- and 90-degree closures (CRL application table). A listing that states only the glass thickness and angle is incomplete if it does not also identify the intended pair and door movement.

5. Closed Gap

With the door closed, measure between the two glass edges—or between the glass and jamb—at the top, middle and bottom. Differences between those measurements can indicate alignment trouble rather than the wrong seal size.

Compare the old profile’s cross-section as well. Record its channel depth, overall projection and magnetic-face position. A gap specification belongs to a particular profile system, not every magnetic seal. The cited CRL profile family, for example, recommends an 11 mm (7/16 inch) panel gap.

6. Finished Length

Measure the installed seal and note any intentional clearance above the threshold or bottom sweep. Confirm that the replacement is long enough before ordering, but do not cut it until its profile, polarity and full-height contact have been checked.

7. Polarity and Orientation

Mark the inside, outside, top and door side on both old profiles before removing them. Similar-looking magnetic strips may repel if one is installed in the wrong orientation.

CRL specifically instructs users to reverse a profile for polarity in one 90-degree arrangement. Dry-fit the proposed pair in its installed orientation before cutting. Do not treat attraction between two loose pieces as proof that they will attract when mounted correctly on the enclosure.

A useful identification photo set shows the complete enclosure straight on, the closed meeting edges from above, each profile end beside a ruler, the glass-thickness measurement and any printed number.

Check Alignment Before Replacing the Seal

A magnetic seal may not be the underlying problem if the door has sagged or moved out of plumb. Close the door slowly and watch where the magnetic faces first touch.

• Contact occurs only at the top or bottom: Check door level, hinge or roller movement, and strike-profile alignment.
• The gap is even but there is no attraction: Check polarity and confirm that the two profiles are a specified pair.
• Vertical contact is good but water escapes below: Inspect the bottom sweep, drip rail and threshold instead.
• The door springs open or rubs: Stop and correct the hinge, roller or enclosure alignment. A different magnetic seal will not correct bad geometry.

DreamLine’s Lumen instructions require the door and strike magnets to make even contact from top to bottom, with the strike profile adjusted to align them (DreamLine Lumen manual).

For a sliding Prime enclosure, DreamLine instructs installers to adjust the upper wheels until the doors operate smoothly and seal tightly with the magnets before pressing the magnetic strips onto the glass (DreamLine Prime manual). Dry-Fit the Pair Before Cutting

Follow the enclosure or seal manufacturer’s instructions because attachment and cutting methods differ. Protect exposed glass edges and corners, and do not pry against tempered glass with a metal tool.

1. Clean the mounting edge and let it dry.
2. Dry-fit the uncut pair and confirm attraction, closing direction and full-height contact.
3. Compare the new profile’s projection with the old cross-section.
4. Cut only by the method specified for that profile, then smooth any rigid cut edge.
5. Press the profile on evenly without hammering it or loading the glass sideways.
6. Open and close the door slowly, checking the threshold and adjacent seals for interference.

Do not assume silicone or adhesive is required. One universal-profile supplier specifies clear silicone only when its product is used on the two thinnest glass sizes listed, illustrating why the instructions for the individual product matter (Gordon Glass). Unspecified adhesive can complicate later replacement without correcting a poorly fitting channel.

Send an Order-Ready Description

A useful parts request might read: Pair of clip-on magnetic profiles for 8 mm glass, 180-degree inline closure, outward-only swing, measured closed glass gap, required finished length, with cross-section photos and polarity orientation shown.

Include the enclosure model whenever it is available. If the model, mounting profile or mating seal cannot be identified, manufacturer review is safer than ordering a part described only as universal.
