Yes. Kohler Anthem EvoCycle reuses runoff from your current shower when Cycle Mode is active. It collects that water in the shower base, passes it through a debris filter, adds 0.5 gallon per minute of fresh water, and sends the mixture back through a selected showerhead or rainhead. Standard Mode uses fresh water only.

Calling the recirculated portion “dirty shower water” is blunt but substantially accurate: it has already contacted the user, shower surfaces, or personal-care products. EvoCycle does not, however, pump completely untreated drain water directly back through the outlet. It filters debris, continuously blends in fresh water, and discards the water after the session rather than storing it for the next user.

Kohler introduced Anthem EvoCycle in February 2026, and Popular Science subsequently included it in its 2026 Home of the Future Awards. The publicity does not resolve every water-quality question. Available sources document same-session reuse, filtration and cleaning routines, but provide no independent chemical or microbiological analysis of the water returned during Cycle Mode.

Cycle Mode Returns Filtered Runoff Mixed With Fresh Water

EvoCycle begins in Standard Mode. Fresh water runs through the handshower while the base reservoir is prepared. When Cycle Mode is activated, water collected by the base enters the recirculating loop.

Kohler’s published 2.5-gpm configuration adds 0.5 gpm of fresh water during Cycle Mode. The other approximately 2 gpm comes from the current shower after passing through the base filter. That is the basis for the claimed reduction of up to 80% while Cycle Mode is operating, according to the Kohler launch announcement.

Total outlet flow and fresh-water draw are therefore different measurements. A Cycle Mode outlet can deliver 2.5 gallons each minute while taking only 0.5 gallon of new water from the supply. The balance is already circulating within that shower session.

The 80% figure does not describe every complete shower. Water used before Cycle Mode begins is entirely fresh, and any later return to Standard Mode also draws fresh water at the normal rate. Reservoir preparation time, outlet selection and user behavior can reduce the whole-shower percentage.

Kohler’s 10-minute example assumes one minute in Standard Mode and nine minutes in Cycle Mode. It uses 2.5 gallons during the first minute and 4.5 gallons of new water during the remaining nine minutes, for 7 gallons total instead of 25 gallons from a conventional 2.5-gpm shower. That is a 72% whole-shower reduction under the stated assumptions, not 80%.

A trade-show configuration used the rainhead as the recirculating outlet and the handshower as the fresh-water outlet. Buyers should not assume every layout works identically. Confirm which outlet receives the mixture on the exact model and installation being quoted.

The Water Is Reused Only During Your Current Shower

The system follows a closed loop that is easier to understand as a water path:

  1. Standard Mode starts with fresh water.
  2. Runoff reaches the shower base and reservoir.
  3. A removable fine-mesh filter captures hair and other physical debris.
  4. Cycle Mode adds 0.5 gpm of fresh water to the circulating volume.
  5. The filtered mixture returns through the selected showerhead or rainhead.
  6. Water returning to the base continues around the loop while Cycle Mode remains active.
  7. The water is discarded after the session rather than retained for another shower.

This is not a household gray-water storage system. EvoCycle does not save one person’s shower water for the next user or distribute it to toilets, sinks or other fixtures. The reused portion comes from your own current shower.

Public descriptions do not fully document the concealed hydraulic sequence or explain in detail how every model handles water displaced by the continuing fresh-water addition. Anyone specifying the equipment should request the current hydraulic diagram and installation manual rather than infer pump, valve and reservoir placement from launch coverage.

A Debris Filter Is Not a Purification System

Kohler describes the base component as a fine-mesh or debris filter that catches hair and particles. No supplied source states its particle-size rating or publishes reduction rates for particular contaminants.

The available evidence does not establish removal of soap, shampoo ingredients, skin oils, dissolved salts, fragrances, hair-dye residue, medicated washes, bacteria or viruses. That does not prove those materials remain at hazardous concentrations. It means the public evidence does not answer the question.

Three separate processes should not be treated as interchangeable:

  • Debris filtration removes particles large enough for the mesh to capture.
  • Fresh-water blending dilutes the circulating water but does not prove contaminant removal.
  • Ozone cleaning maintains the system after use or during scheduled maintenance.

A Cycle Mode user should assume that part of the delivered mixture has already contacted the body and shower environment. Neither a mesh filter nor dilution makes that portion equivalent to untouched supply water.

The Verge’s report describes filtered, closed-loop reuse but does not independently test the returned water. No supplied source provides independent microbial, chemical or long-term hygiene results. The evidence therefore supports neither calling the mixture sterile nor concluding that the product is unsafe.

Ozone Cleans the System After Use, Not Every Returning Pass

Kohler identifies two ozone-based maintenance functions. Rapid Clean is associated with cleaning after each shower, while Deep Clean is a more extensive periodic process. The launch announcement recommends Deep Clean monthly and describes the receptor filter as removable, washable with fresh water and dishwasher-safe.

A trade-show demonstration described a five-minute Rapid Clean cycle and a 15-minute Deep Clean prompt after every 60 showers. Those details differ from broader language describing Rapid Clean as an automatic after-shower process and Deep Clean as monthly maintenance. The variation may reflect software, model settings or presentation language, so owners need the manual for their exact controller and system version.

None of those descriptions establishes continuous ozone treatment of the water while it is returning through the shower outlet. Ozone cleaning is described in an after-use or maintenance context. It should not be cited as proof that every pass through the active loop has already been disinfected.

Before purchase, get written answers to four maintenance questions: whether Rapid Clean starts automatically, how long each cleaning cycle runs, what triggers Deep Clean, and what happens when a cycle is skipped or interrupted. The installer should also show how to remove the filter and preserve access to the pump, reservoir, controller and internal connections.

Savings Depend on Time Spent in Each Mode

For the manufacturer’s example, EvoCycle fresh-water use equals 2.5 gallons for the first Standard Mode minute plus 0.5 gallon for every Cycle Mode minute. A conventional comparison equals the shower’s flow rate multiplied by its entire duration.

These are calculations from Kohler’s stated flows, not independent field measurements. Actual use depends on reservoir preparation, time in each mode, installed outlets and whether the user switches back to fresh water for rinsing.

EPA says a standard showerhead uses 2.5 gpm, while a WaterSense-labeled model must use no more than 2.0 gpm and satisfy the program’s independently certified efficiency and performance criteria (EPA WaterSense). WaterSense does not test EvoCycle’s recirculation or sanitation claims, but a 2.0-gpm fixture is a relevant lower-cost comparison.

EvoCycle’s distinctive benefit is not simply lower water use. It is the ability to maintain a higher total outlet flow while drawing less new water during Cycle Mode. A conventional low-flow head reduces demand without a reservoir, pump, filter, digital controls or ozone-maintenance routine.

Recirculating recently heated water should also reduce the amount of replacement water that must be heated. The supplied evidence contains no independent measured energy performance, so the calculator requires the user to enter a heating cost rather than assuming a percentage.

The $8,325 Hardware Cost Is Not the Installed Price

The published $7,500 system plus $825 base totals $8,325 before installation. No universal installed-price figure is available in the supplied evidence.

This is not equivalent to replacing a showerhead. The system incorporates a receptor or shower base, reservoir, filter, recirculation equipment, digital controls, outlets, drainage and serviceable components. It also requires electrical power for the pump and controller.

The Verge reported a 4.5-inch-deep floor cutout for the installation it covered. That measurement should not be applied automatically to another model, floor structure or bathroom. Feasibility can differ sharply among new construction, a complete remodel and a retrofit over an existing slab or framed floor.

A complete quote should identify the receptor, fixtures, electrical work, drainage changes, floor alterations, waterproofing, labor, commissioning, finish repairs and service access. It should also state which components are included and who is responsible for permits and inspections.

Because those costs are unknown, the calculator’s payback result is a best-case hardware comparison rather than a full project payback. Electricity, filters, cleaning, repairs and financing would lengthen it. An unusually expensive installation could change the result more than the household’s water rate does.

The Purchase Decision Turns on Four Unresolved Details

First, request the filter’s mesh or particle-size specification and any test results for substances beyond hair and visible debris. If returned-water hygiene is decisive, ask specifically for independent microbial and chemical results from water sampled during Cycle Mode rather than results from cleaned system components.

Second, confirm product restrictions. The available material does not resolve how the system should be used with hair dye, medicated washes, oils, scrubs, antiseptic products or unusually heavy debris. Ask whether those products require Standard Mode or a particular cleaning procedure.

Third, verify mode and failure behavior. The written specification should identify the recirculating outlet, explain how quickly the system can return to fresh water, and state whether it automatically reverts to Standard Mode after a clogged filter, interrupted cleaning cycle or pump fault.

Fourth, establish local service access before waterproofing and finishes conceal the equipment. A sophisticated water-saving system is a poor fit if no qualified technician can reach or service its pump, controller, filter housing and reservoir.

Standard Mode Avoids Reused Water Entirely

Standard Mode supplies fresh water without recirculating shower runoff. It is the appropriate operating choice for anyone who does not want used water returned at that moment, although exact outlet behavior should be confirmed for the installed configuration.

Cycle Mode is the water-saving setting. What returns is neither raw, untreated drain water nor independently proven purified water. It is same-session runoff that has passed through a debris filter and been blended with a continuing 0.5-gpm supply of fresh water.

The up-to-80% claim is mathematically consistent for the Cycle Mode portion of Kohler’s 2.5-gpm configuration. Whether it justifies at least $8,325 in hardware depends on shower duration, household use, utility costs, installation scope and the buyer’s comfort with filtered same-shower recirculation.
